SolidWorks can be important to know, depending on what your focus is. As a mechanical engineer, you could focus in any number of areas including machine design, control systems, fluid flow, heat transfer, or others. If your focus is on machine design then knowing a 3D CAD package such as SolidWorks will be at least somewhat important. However, even if you work for a company whose engineering work is focused on machine design, the types of work that the engineers perform is further broken down based on the phases of the design cycle — there will be engineers focused of concept development.
